Sails in the Pool House

Sails

I was asked to design a light for my clients pool house.

The walls were all ready rendered in pale tadelakt, the colours for the kitchen area had been chosen, described as ‘neither sea nor sky’.

The building, designed by the architect Richard Parr, is asymmetrical in design, with a strong emphasis on natural materials and craft.

I chose to lead with a sculptural early modernist feel piece, one that echoed the buildings function, as well as form.

Soft forms created here by steamed plywood, which was tricky to achieve as the form bent in two directions.

The hand cast glass shapes were sculptured in molten glass to match the cut out shapes in the plywood, these colours carefully chosen and placed.

Hand sanding and curving the plywood to fit the glass, sized and gessoed, then sanded back again to create a smooth soft stone finish, finally specially treated and a soft sheen of wax..

The brass shades designed to allow slits of light, and each shade carefully tilted and weighted to hang from the ceiling.

There is so much in this piece which I will be working with for future projects.

Brass shades, made specifically for this project, laser cut and curved, patinated to a deep black, left gold brass inside, create warm luminance, match the brass poles and fittings all made in-house.
